One week feels relatively normal, then suddenly there’s finals footy on every screen, school holidays are underway, families are filling the tables, the bar is three deep and everyone seems to want something at exactly the same time.
For clubs and hospitality venues, September isn’t simply another busy month, it’s a stress test. The interesting thing about busy periods is that they rarely create operational problems, they expose the ones that were already there.
There are plenty of reasons for Australian venues to prepare for increased activity this month. Queensland school holidays run from 19 September to 5 October, while Victorian holidays begin 21 September and NSW follows from 28 September.
September is packed with major sporting action, with the AFL Finals already underway and the NRL wrapping up its regular season before turning towards the 4 October Grand Final.
Queensland venues also have plenty to look forward to later in the month, with the Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership Grand Finals on 26 September, followed by the Wallabies taking on South Africa in Perth on 27 September.
That’s a lot of reasons for people to head out and a lot of pressure on the systems behind the venue.
On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, an extra click doesn’t seem like much, neither does walking back to a terminal, neither does checking something manually, neither does entering the same information into two different systems.
But add hundreds of transactions, a packed dining room and a major game kicking off in ten minutes, and those little inefficiencies start multiplying.
One extra step becomes hundreds, a small delay becomes a queue, peak periods magnify friction.
That’s why preparation for busy periods shouldn’t only be about rostering another person behind the bar, it should include looking at the technology you’re using.
Orders should move where they need to go, payments should happen quickly, staff should be able to move around the venue.
Member information should be available when it’s needed, and management should have visibility over what’s happening without needing to be everywhere at once.
Paimnt’s payment offering, for example, brings mobile POS, EFTPOS and Tap-on-Glass together with the POS environment, with the aim of supporting table turnover and mobile efficiency.
That’s the difference between technology simply being present in a venue and technology actually helping operate one.
September isn’t the finish line, it’s the warm up. Once September finishes, venues don’t exactly get to put their feet up.
Spring functions arrive, then Melbourne Cup, then Summer, and end of year parties.
The venues that use September to identify bottlenecks and simplify operations aren’t just preparing for one busy month, they’re preparing for the busiest stretch of the year.
At Paimnt, that’s exactly what we build for, and we love being part of the solution for you.
